[ARCHIVED] Hoopla Borrows Changed to 8 Per Month

CEQLSays (10)

Due to the rising cost of Hoopla checkouts, we're changing the total amount of borrows each month from 10 to 8. This will start on September 2, 2025.

The why:

In 2019, we increased the amount of borrows from 3 to 4. We thought this was a reasonable change--until spring 2020, when we had to close our doors. In the first few months we extended our borrows to 8, but finally went to 10 to make up for the amount of physical items people weren't checking out due to the pandemic.

Since summer 2020, we've been offering 10 borrows a month, but usage and costs have risen in that time. Although we've tried promotional campaigns and borrowing caps, we think the best bet is to drop us down to 8 checkouts per month.

So far in August, 60 patrons have checked out more than 8 items. We're hoping that limiting to just 8 will affect the least amount of people while providing us needed relief.

I'm sure people will be upset. That's okay! They have every right to. If so, here are some solutions you can pass along:

  • Use Libby! Although there might be a slight wait time, they'll be able to visit the backlog of currently available items.

    • They can also use the "Notify Me" tag in Libby to show us they want certain items. We can use that info when we're planning our orders.

  • Use Magzter or the News & Advance online access for unlimited content.

  • When Hoopla offers Bonus Borrows, take advantage of that! These are additional borrows available outside of what our limit is. This isn't guaranteed, as Bonus Borrows are only available as Hoopla determines, but Tina does a great job of promoting when they're available on our social media.

For your information, here is the email we're sending out on next Tuesday to our Hoopla users.

Please direct any additional questions/complaints/comments to Jordan.
