[ARCHIVED] Tips & Tricks

Want to transfer a phone call to someone's extension? Try using the BlindX transfer! This sends the call to the other person with the original caller's information displayed.

Why we want to do this:

If you're transferring a call to someone else, it makes sense to pass along all the information from the caller. This is the easiest way to do it, and is especially helpful when you aren't able to do a warm transfer (calling the recipient first to let them know who you're patching through). It's also a good way to make sure we're not answering the phone as though we're speaking to our coworkers ("Hey, how's it going?") rather than to patrons ("Hello, thank you for calling the __ Library. How can I help you?")

How to do a BlindX transfer:

  1. When you receive the call and decide it needs to be transferred, ask the caller if you can put them on a brief hold while you transfer them.
  2. Next to the keypad, click the hold button (phone symbol with pause symbol).

  3. On the screen, click the button for the third option at the bottom: "BlindX."

  4. Enter the 4-digit extension for the phone you're trying to transfer to. Note: Older phone numbers may have extensions that are the same as their phone numbers (ex. Sarah's phone number is 332-9658 and her extension is 9658). Newer numbers, however, may have different extensions from their phone numbers (ex. my number is 443-2037 but my extension is 8013). Refer to the newest phone directory Jordan sent for accurate numbers/extensions.
  5. When you're done, click the third option again: "Enter."

  6. You're done! Your coworker's phone will now be ringing with the caller, and the caller is still listening to the hold ads we pay for. They can leave a message, if your coworker isn't available to answer the phone.
